SuperCast Electrodes, 1/8"

The SuperCast18 SuperCast Electrodes, 1/8" are specifically designed for welding dirty cast iron, making them the ideal solution when other electrodes fail. Featuring a unique flux coating on an alloyed bi-metal core wire, these electrodes create dense, strong, and crack-resistant welds on various types of cast iron, including gray, ductile, Meehanite, and nodular cast iron. These electrodes are especially effective for contaminated, old, oil-soaked, or dirty base metals and can also be used for joining cast iron to steel. The weld deposits are machinable, making them perfect for machine repairs and build-up work.

    • 5/32”: 90-130 amps
    • 3/16”: 110-170 amps
  • Applications: Ideal for sewer pipe repairs, machine bases, transmission housings, gears, and cast iron to steel repairs
  • Deposits: Machinable for post-welding finishing

Procedure

  • Heavy sections: Remove worn or cracked metal and bevel the joint using Chamfertrode or a grinding wheel.
  • Crack repair: Drill a "stop" hole at each end of cracks to prevent spreading during welding.
  • Preheating: For very heavy sections, preheat to approximately 350°F.
  • Welding: Use short stringer beads for the root pass and lightly peen after removing slag. Maintain a short to medium arc and use the lowest amperage to prevent overheating of the base metal.
  • Arc breaking: Always back whip into the weld crater to prevent cratering.
  • Weaving: For multi-pass work, weaving up to two times the rod diameter is acceptable.
  • Cooling: Allow weld joints to slow cool for maximum strength and machinability.

Ideal For

  • Welding and repairing cast iron that is contaminated, oil-soaked, or dirty
  • Heavy-duty applications like sewer pipe repair, machine bases, and gear housings
  • Joining cast iron to steel for structural and machinery repairs
  • Heavy-duty industrial work where crack resistance and machinability are essential
  • Technicians and welders who need reliable electrodes for challenging cast iron welding tasks

These SuperCast18 electrodes provide a robust solution for welding dirty, contaminated cast iron, delivering dense, crack-resistant welds that are easy to machine and finish for long-lasting repairs.
